Gears of War 3 has broken a new record, becoming the first ever Xbox 360 exclusive to sell over three million copies in its opening week.

As well as becoming the first ever 360 exclusive to break the three million opening sales mark, the title also managed to boost the franchise's lifetime sales past the one billion dollars milestone.

"Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series
has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the
platform ever since," commented Microsoft corporate VP, Phil Spencer. "Gears of War 3 kicked off the biggest Christmas period in Xbox history, setting the standard for the kind of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year."

The news means that the gritty finale to the popular trilogy is
already halfway to its six million lifetime sales target. The target was originally place on the game by designer Cliff Bleszinski, who announced it in a prior interview with GameSpot UK.

The news confirms previous reports that Gears of War 3 had outsold its two competitors, boasting the highest opening week sales ever seen by the franchise.
