From yesterday evening, the cape-and-cowl heavy MMO DC Universe Online added a free-to-play account option on both the PC and PlayStation 3.
DC Universe Online's move to become a free-to-play was announced earlier in 2011 after mixed critical reviews and a marked downturn in the number of active players hampered the title's growth.
"We are confident that going free-to-play will expand the action combat experience of DC Universe Online by making the game more accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game their way," commented John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment on the game's mixed performance and reception.
With the new free-to-play account option DC Universe Online will now be able to choose from three new options; the new free access, Premium Access and Legendary Access.
Free Access will reportedly grant players access to "the base game content", while Premium Access will receive additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. The premium package will be available to players who purchase $5 worth of in-game items.
Truly dedicated players willing to shell-out the hefty $14.99 USD monthly fee will receive Legendary Access, which grants them access to all DLC packs, more than 16 character slots, over 60 inventory slots and the ability to form Leagues.
