Since launching its new free-to-play account option just two days ago DC Universe Online has reportedly netted itself 120,000 new players.
Sony Online Entertainment, the company that manages the MMO, reported the 400 percent surge in players today, claiming that 120,000 new players had signed up to the free account option. Prior to the free-to-play initiative the MMO only boasted a dwindling 30,000 paid subscribers.
Sony representatives went on to claim it had always intended to launch the game with a free-to-play account option, but had been forced to remove it due to unforeseen development costs.
"This is the right business model," commented SOE executive producer Lorin Jameson earlier in September. "If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one."
