Indie game developer Mode 7 has revealed that its turn-based strategy title Frozen Synapse, released in May earlier this year, has sold over 300,000 copies in total.
Mode 7 co-founder Paul Taylor explained that over $300,000 in sales came from direct purchases at the game's official website, as opposed to purchases through digital distributors.
He also noted that the paid beta, which launched in May 2010, brought in $135,000 alone, allowing the developers to switch to full-time work on the game.
In comparison, the game costs £140,000 ($217,600) to develop, and took four years to create, Taylor divulged.
"Frozen Synapse has been a success for Mode 7, both for us personally and for the company," he said. "We proved that we could make a game that was creatively satisfying and commercially viable."
"We deliberately chose to make a game that could potentially make less money than other types of game! However, as the marketplace gets constantly busier, we believe that targeting niches is the way to go."
