Sony has published its official listing for PS3 firmware update 4.40, which is now live for PS3 owners to download at their leisure.

As well as the typical stability improvements that are offered by firmware updates, firmware update 4.40 also lays down the groundwork for something rather interesting - the ability for gamers to download from the online store to their PS3.

The service will become available in May, but it means you'll be able to download purchased content from the Sony Entertainment Network to your PS3. According to the firmware update, there will be a detailed guide upon the service's launch to help users explain how to fully take advantage of this feature.

Update 4.40 also expanded Sony's support of stereo headsets for PS2 games. CECHYA-008, CECHYA-0086 and CECHYA-0088 will now work with PS2 classics that have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store.
