When the PS4 was annnounced, like some had expected, we saw that Sony's new controller was very similar to its predecessors, with a few exceptions like the touch pad. However, it seems like Sony had made various prototypes for the DualShock 4, including one with the analog sticks in the same position as the Xbox 360's controller.
In an interview with Toshimasa Aoki, manager of the company's product planning department, Aoki revealed that the company had experimented with various form factors for DualShock 4. "We did test having the analogue sticks on top, since the Xbox has the left side on top [above the D-pad]. Especially from the shooter teams - we got feedback that that's what they wanted. They knew that consumers liked the 360 for shooters," said Aoki.
The manager also revealed the team had attempted to create a controller similar to the Wii U's Pro controller, with both sticks on the top of the controller. In the end, the team felt that keeping the old PlayStation look was the best choice, "it's kind of in our DNA," said Aoki.
