A classic gem of the PSOne era, the Arc the Lad series has been filed for trademark by Sony. While renewing a trademark is nothing extraordinary, this could be taken as a sign that the franchise will soon have a new entry into the series.
One of the defining features of Arc the Lad was that each game after the first both introduced and brought back entire casts of characters. The gameplay was a mix of both classic JRPG the tactical style seen in games such as Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics. Each enemy confrontation took place on a map divided by a grid. Each character could move and attack relative to their grid range. The attack mechanics, however, remained true to classic JRPGs. Once the original trilogy ended, the series expanded to the PS2 and began to experiment with the Arc the Lad formula. The last game, Arc the Lad: End of Darkness, was released on the PS2 in 2004.
While a new entry to any JRPG franchise is likely to receive a warm reception, the original trilogy of Arc the Lad can still be found on the PlayStation Network for $5.99.
