It looks like fans of Majora's Mask will receive a little love with the release of Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and 3DS. The very popular and creepy Skull Kid will be a part of the upcoming fighting game as one of the very useful Assist Trophies.
It is also worth mentioning that this is not the first time that Skull Kid and Majora's Mask have been referenced in a next gen game. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, also contains various references of Majora's Mask as well. Some groups, especially Operation Moonfall, are taking this as a sign that a 3DS remake of the eerie Nintendo 64 title is in fact happening.
Assist Trophies were introduced to the Smash Bros. series in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii. Appearing as a small, encapsulated statue, players would grab it as they would any item and watch as a character would break free from the glass cover. The Assist Trophy would then fight on the player's behalf by attacking the opposing player.
Though Skull Kid will not be making an appearance as a playable character on the roster, perhaps fans will see his inclusion as a fair compromise as Super Smash Bros. arrives on store shelves in Spring 2014.
