Star Wars Battlefront will take place during the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, DICE has announced. The publisher has also revealed screenshots, a new trailer, and gameplay details.
Players will have the option to either fight for the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire, while taking on the role of iconic Star Wars characters such as Boba Fett and Darth Vader.
"You can storm in as the Dark Lord himself. You can wield a lightsaber. You can Force choke the rebel scum, which is fun," said Niklas Fegraeus, Star Wars Battlefront's design director. "Basically, you are the boss of the battle. This means that you, as Vader, can lead your team to victory "” if you play well."
"We wanted it to feel authentic to this universe," added executive producer Patrick Bach. "You can get into these vehicles, from speeder bikes to X-wings, TIE fighters, AT-STs, AT-ATs. There's a wide range of vehicles that we wanted to realize. The difficulty with a game is that they need to be balanced with the troops on the ground."
Bach has also confirmed that the game won't have a campaign mode. Instead, it will feature "crafted missions" that can be played alone, locally via split-screen or cooperatively online. There's also a Partner feature in which two players can share experience and gear, and spawn at each other's location.
As for the multiplayer component, Star Wars Battlefront will support multiplayer battles up to 40 players. Fegraeus states that there will be at least 4 planets and 8 different maps at launch, with places such as Endor, Hoth and Taooine already confirmed to be featured in the game.
The game offers freedom in terms of customization, as players can customize their characters and choose their gear, weapons and abilities. In addition, there's also going to be an option choose and switch between a first-person perspective and a third-person perspective while in battle.
DICE has also unvelied a DLC expansion for the game, which will will be titled Battle of Jakku. This DLC expansion will be available for free on the 8th of December, just a few weeks after Star Wars Battlefront's release.
"You never get to see it in the new movie, so it was this brilliant opportunity to recreate the Battle of Jakku, which you only see the remnants of in the movie. In the game, you actually get to play the Battle of Jakku. It's the same place from the new movie but 30 years earlier," said Bach.
Star Wars Battlefront launches on PS4, Xbox One and PC, on the 17th of November in North America and on the 20th of November in Europe.
