2013's Tomb Raider reboot has sold 8.5 million copies, Square Enix announced. The 8.5 million figure makes it the best-selling entry in franchise history, surpassing Tomb Raider II's 8 million units.
Despite selling 3.4 million units in its first month, the game failed to meet Square Enix's expectations. Square Enix later released the Definitive Edition of the game in January 2014, which helped boost the sales.
"Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game's incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players. Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game," said Crystal Dynamics.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2013's sequel, launches this fall on Xbox One and Xbox 360 as a timed exclusive.
