Nintendo President Satoru Iwata Has Passed Away

Nintendo of Japanese has announced through their corporate website that its president and CEO, Satoru Iwata, died on Saturday. He was 55, the cause of death was stated in the press release as a bile duct growth, with the full statement below:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

He was forced to skip last year's E3 due to health issues from the bile duct growth, and had underwent surgery shortly after to remove it. He had stated a few months later via Twitter "I'm progressing well".

He first joined Nintendo's HAL Laboratory in the 1980's, working on games such as Balloon Fight and EarthBound. He became Nintendo's Director in 2000 and was appointed as the fourth President of Nintendo in 2002, succeeding Hiroshi Yamauchi. During his time as President, he oversaw the GameCube, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo Wii U releases and was well known for his host status in the company's Nintendo Direct presentations.
