Back in July, Techland announced that Dying Light would receive a massive expansion dubbed 'The Following'. Now, the producer has revealed the expansion's first gameplay trailer, as well as new details and its price.
The Following will feature a brand new campaign, in which the player will have to infiltrate a cult that has risen to power following the zombie outbreak. The expansion will also include a large new map, new gameplay mechanics, new weapons and drivable vehicles. Techland states that this expansion features enough content to offer players over 10 hours of gameplay.
"For Dying Light: The Following we're adding a number of bold game-changers to create one massive expansion. Something big that will give the game a brand-new flavour. The new map alone is the same size as all the previous maps from Dying Light combined, so there is a lot we're packing in here. We also kept a close eye on player feedback to help tailor what we've created here. Hopefully people will see that this new expansion is first and foremost, for the fans," said producer Tymon Smektala.
"An important part of this experience is commandeering all-terrain buggies and enjoying the game's creative brutality and freedom of movement in high gear. But drivable vehicles are only one of many new features we're preparing for The Following. We're calling it an expansion pack and we take it seriously, so you can expect it to be jam-packed with new quests, mechanics, abilities, weapons, and challenges. The story also unfolds in a way that really helps connect what was happening in Harran to the outside world and will show Kyle Crane in a totally new light to players.
"It's 10+ hours of gameplay. If you want to maximise it then it's about 20 hours, maybe even more. The thing is, we started smaller but the whole team got so excited that everyone in the studio wanted to leave their mark on the expansion pack. Even when we had level designers that weren't tied to the project, they wanted to create a quest or mission or anything that could be in the expansion pack. It really sparked the imagination of our guys."
Techland also revealed that the base game has already sold over 5 million units across all platforms, and is currently one of the best selling games of 2015. "To be honest, I think even we are a little surprised by the scope of our success. We knew that we'd made a good game. If you are a gamer, even if you make games you are still a gamer, so we know the game is good when you feel that rush when you play," said Smektala.
"So we knew that Dying Light is a good game, we know it's going to be successful, but that successful? We are in the 10 best-selling games in the US right now for the first half of the year, so tremendous success. More than 5 million copies sold."
Dying Light's 'The Following' DLC will be available for $14.99, but Season Pass holders can download it for free. A release date has yet to be revealed.
