Square Enix announced during a Final Fantasy XV livestream earlier today that Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis, originally announced alongside Episode Ardyn as part of Final Fantasy XV "The Dawn of the Future", have been cancelled. Despite this news, Episode Ardyn is still in production and will release in March 2019.
During the livestream, Final Fantasy XV global brand director Akio Ofuji explained that while the team had announced earlier this year that that Final Fantasy XV would be getting four additional DLC episodes, the company has made an important directional change, and there was a need to re-examine these projects, which ultimately led to the decision of cancelling Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis. Ofuji added that he knows many fans have been eager to play these episodes, and the entire development team is regretful that they are unable to meet everyone’s expectations.
Square Enix also revealed more details about Episode Ardeyn, which will offer players the opportunity to step into the role of Final Fantasy XV’s main antagonist. Set approximately 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy XV, players will learn more about Ardyn’s backstory in a story of death and restoration. The release will be accompanied by a special anime episode titled, Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn - Prologue.
Final Fantasy XV is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
