DeathSpank Hands-On

Ron Gilbert is a legend in the video games industry, having created some of the best adventure games ever seen. However, while his new project contains some aspects of adventure games like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, it also contains elements from the Action Role-Playing genre. It essentially creates a game that feels like a LucasArts adventure game mixed with Diablo.

Players take the role of DeathSpank, a man who believes his destiny is to be a hero. Because of this, ever since he was young, he always tried to help the citizens of the world however he could. It made for a very apathetic population, who don't really bother doing anything for themselves as they know DeathSpank will do it for them.

The game takes place in a pseudo 2D world, as all models are in a single plane. However, when players walk back and forth, the scenery changes and objects pop-up to create a spherical illusion. All of the enemies and NPCs that DeathSpank encounters throughout the vast world also have a great deal of charisma and it makes for a story and experience that promises to be thoroughly enjoyable. The game is also said to be extremely lengthy, and while no specifics have been given, EA Partners have claimed that it will be longer than most retail products.

Combat is really simple, but also very enjoyable. Players can use both the face buttons and d-pad to use weapons and items. Anything can be assigned to these buttons, and pressing the button performs an attack. The weapons are extremely diverse, with a mixture of ranged and melee. There are also justice weapons which perform a much more powerful attack once they've been charged by doing damage. Players can also pick-up new armour and assign a variety of curative items to the same buttons.

With 100s of quests, an extremely diverse amount of weaponry and enjoyable combat, DeathSpank is a title which is looking to be a stellar downloadable game when it appears on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in the Summer of 2010.
