Those who have been following ACE Team since their last Xbox Live Arcade title, Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition, are already aware of their next upcoming project, Rock of Ages. For the unaware, Rock of Ages is a wacky, zanny take on the tower defence genre but with a hint of puzzles games such as Marble Madness. Earlier this month at E3 2011 was the first time most people had gotten a chance to try out the game and GamingUnion.net was among one of them. It's a unique game, to say the least.
The main catch of the game is the ability to travel through various artistic periods in history such as Ancient Greece, which was where the show floor demo took place. The gameplay has two different approaches based on the two genres its utilizing. The first part of the level had us setting up the battlefield with various objects such as wooden towers, catapults and boulder-seeking cows which would try ramming incoming rocks to roll them off-course. The idea is for the player to utilize their limited resources (as each object has its own cost) to strengthen their defences while placing enough objects to interrupt their opponents.
However, one doesn't have much time to do all this as your opponent, which was controlled by the CPU, started attacking shortly after we began our demo. This shift requires players to navigate their own boulder to attack the enemy's stronghold while making sure to keep their own updated at the same time. This is furthered by the fact that the tracks that your boulder has to pass through become increasingly tight and narrow, making every move count as each time the rock falls off the path it will become increasingly smaller and less powerful.
Sadly we didn't manage to beat our opponent, but the demo did showcase some very unique abilities and gameplay features that we haven't seen in any other games that come to recent memory. We're looking forward to learning more about the game, which will be hitting PSN, Xbox Live Arcade and PC later this Summer.
