Crysis is without a doubt one of the best graphical game series out on PC and even consoles. This still remains true with Crysis 3 releasing soon in February and to wet everyone's appetite, EA has released a multiplayer beta for all to enjoy. These betas are free to all to download on PSN, XBLA, and Origin for PC.
Now I have to admit that I am not in anyway a fan of the Crysis series and this beta was my first experience into the franchise. If you are the same as me and aren't to sure about the series wither, this beta is a good place to wet your feet. This beta lets you try out two of the games unique multiplayer modes, as well as two maps to fight it out on. You will also get a chance to try out different loadouts, such as assault rifles, shotguns, snipers, and machine guns.
The first game mode on display was Crash Site, where two teams are trying to capture different dynamic sites over both maps. Every so often you will be alerted that a pod has crashed and your team needs to defend it as long as possible and whatever team reaches a certain amount of points first wins. While this sounds like many other shooter modes, this offers a different feeling mode with the fact that you actually can dismantle parts of the pod that crashed to help defend yourself. Mix that in with the fact that every player can also go invisible for a short period of time, make these spots a very lively area to defend.
The other mode to try out is called Hunter and this is a very different multiplayer feeling. One team is a group of soldiers trying to survive for a certain amount of time and the other is a group of hunters who only have a bow to use, while being invisible the whole time. The hunters explore the map for each soldiers and if a soldier dies, they are respawned as a new hunter to take down their former teammates. This forces teammates to cooperate in a way that would seem familiar to the ending of 300 or else you will be hunted down by countless invisible hunters. These really lead to some tense moments no matter what team you end on.
I have to admit to being surprised a bit by this beta, as a fan of many shooters I go into most new shooters with a bit of doubt that they will hold my attention like Call of Duty or Killzone. The controls were tight and the cybernetic suits really make the first person immersion feel great. Cybernetic suits let you not only get a boost in armor or stay invisible for a short amount of time, but also run, jump and climb more than the average human solider. The feeling of jumping off a roof and smashing into the ground killing a team of people is a hard one to match as well.
While the suit feels nice and the guns are all fun to use no matter what your cup of tea is, the actual fire fights underwhelm a bit. Outside of crazy moments happening, a group of players just shooting each other never feels a fulfilling as the rest of the game. Most people you will come up against just take so many bullets to kill due to armor power from each suit that it feels like you are doing nothing. While the same time one melee hit from behind will be an instant kill for anyone and this leads to a few frustrating moments.
Ignoring the fact that Crysis 3 multiplayer makes most players into bullet sponges taken right out of Uncharted Drakes Fortune, it is a very well put together feature. The visuals would make most campaigns green with envy and the netcode is surprisingly stable for a popular open beta. Still not everything is smooth sailing in this beta, so expect to see some bugs such as falling through the world and the occasional hard reset. Since this beta will be free to everyone until February 12, a whole week before the game releases on February 19, be sure to check it out while you can. After you try out the beta, let us know what you think of it in the comments below.
