Fuse Demo Impressions

My Love for Insomniac Games has done much more than slowly fade away and at this point is free falling into a pit void of any originality. After Ratchet and Clank: A Crank in Time released, none of their games have shown us anything that has reached that level of quality. The only excuse I could think of for all of these mediocre games releasing was that Insomniac was focusing all the resources they could on Fuse.

Fuse is the first multiplatform game to come from Insomniac games published by EA for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It originally started out as a much more stylized game called Overstrike, but last year the game got a much more dark look and was renamed Fuse. You may still be wondering to yourself why this happened, but this was the first sign that Fuse was not going something worth your time, let alone money.

Now less than a month before the game is released, a demo showing off the game in action is out for all 3,000 of you excited about this game. Now if I seem like I am being a bit hard on Fuse that is because I played the game and felt like I have been stabbed in the back for the last time by one of my favorite developers. So for all of you still interested in hearing about this utterly mediocre 3rd person shooter, I pray that take a good long look at yourself if your still interested in the game.

After all of the changes from Overstrike to Fuse, the game is still a four player co-op shooter. The game basically plays like a lesser version of Uncharted, but with crazy weapons similar to the ones you would find in Ratchet and Clank. While this sounds like a great game, all it really ends up delivering on is a mediocre 3rd person shooter. All four characters try to force their "charm" on you, but end up feeling life obvious stereotypes.

I wouldn't be surprised if you show a picture of the characters in the game and you could guess their personality in a matter of seconds. The story or even in game dialogue doesn't ever feel like it has that Insomniac charm that the past few poor games could at least hold onto. While this demo was a vertical slice of a very bland looking story, the fact that I couldn't even find a single character to not hate playing as was enough of a warning sign to not get my hopes up.

While I didn't go into much detail with how the game play, there are two simple reasons behind that. When I say it plays like a generic 3rd person shooter, anyone who hasn't just recently woken up in a coma will have a good idea what that means. Finally the game is just the perfect storm of mediocre, while it isn't the worst game of its kind by far to release, it makes it so much more depressing to talk about when it comes from a developer such as Insomniac Games.

This demo seems to be EA's first and last attempt at advertising Fuse to the public. To say the very least it does not live up to ANY expectations you might have for this game. The best result to come from Fuse releasing is that it will sell so bad that the developers get bought by Sony just to survive. If Fuse isn't going to be the final kick in the butt for Insomniac to step their game up, it will most likely be the studios kiss of death and not a pretty way to go out at all.

If you have played the demo for Fuse and want to share your opinions, feel free to leave them in the comments below. Also if you didn't agree with my opinions or just had a question for me in regards to this preview, I will answer any questions you post below as well.
