The Naruto Ultimate Ninja series is known for having drop dead gorgeous visuals and simple, but fun gameplay. The latest sequel, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is almost here and there is now a demo to try out the opening of the game. This will have you reenacting the battle where the nine tailed fox attacks Konoha and it is up to the Third and Fourth Hokage to take down the mysterious attackers.
It starts off with the Third Hokage and many other village ninjas teaming up to stop the gigantic nine tailed fox. You get to actually jump from building to building in this amazing set piece moment as you dodge the monsters massive attacks. The Storm series had had massive boss battles before. but this is taking it up to 11 and really makes you feel like you are leading this team of ninjas to defend your home.
Inbetween jumping great distances, you can use your fire ball jutsus, throw giant staffs, and even swing an even larger ever of your giant staff when the nine tailed fox get close enough. Learning how to use all of your skills is very quick and simple even if you have never played any of the Storm games. Simple gameplay lets you get wrapped up in the game and in this demo there are quite a few "WOW" moments, even if you are a long time Naruto fan.
As you weaken the nine tails with your attacks and help from other ninjas, you will have moments where special character arrive and use their unique attacks. These will trigger quick time events (QTE) and pulling them off fast enough will help you unlock a secret event at the end of a battle. The final attacks that helps hold off the nine tails is sure to be one of most memorable parts of the demo.
After that, you will get to control the Fourth Hokage and he has to defeat the mysterious man controlling the nine tailed fox. This one on one battle lets you have a more traditional fight, but that doesn't mean it won't have over the top attacks. The revamped gameplay from Storm Generations is still here and keeps the gameplay challenging instead of an overly simplified fighting game. If you have pulled off enough QTEs in time from earlier, you will get to see a secret event that helps you learn more about the character and their motivations.
Both battles were fun even though though one was a one on one battle and the other was a battle that involved the entire village. Storm 3 is showing that it plans on bringing back the incredible boss battles that the series was missing in Generations and going all out this time. The refined gameplay for normal battles will even have a few changes to make this entry feel like the best Naruto game yet.
Even without the gameplay, the visuals alone make the Storm series, the best way to experience the story of Naruto. Looking like an interactive anime and cutting all of the filler, help the story never feel bogged downed. A problem that has kept many anime and manga fans from checking out one of the most popular series in the world. This demo will have you on the edge of your seat in anticipation for more by the time you finish this demo for any fan of Naruto or 3D fighters. CyberConnect 2 seems to be ready to knock another incredible game out of the park with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3.
The demo can be downloaded today off of PSN or XBLA and this impressions was based off the PS3 version. If you have played the demo be sure to let us know what you thought in the comments below.
